Palinges to Montceau-les-Mines, then on to Chagny

After a couple of yummy pastries at the bakery in Palinges, we headed off for the day.  The route started on hilly farm roads, up and down.  The last 12 km we diverted to an alternate route which was on a road with slightly more traffic, but flatter along the canal.  After a short day of 27 km we arrived early at the hotel La Konine in the center of Montceau-les-Mines, and after cleaning up headed out to walk around the town.  Dinner was at an excellent Italian restaurant.  The owner was born in Morocco, had lived in Italy in his youth and eventually settled in France.

Markers on the cycle route.  The 6 at the top is for the Eurovelo 6 (which runs from the French coast all the way to the Black Sea.  The logo to the right is for the Burgundy cycle route.

Today we continued on to Chagny.  This stage was almost all flat and following a very nice cycle path along the canal.

We stopped for a snack break in Saint-Léger-sur-Dheune at a nice little park with picnic tables which was also one of the bases for Locaboat, a company which rents charter boats along the French canals.

The row crops we were seeing some days ago have largely been replaced by small herds of cattle.

Even though we've been riding in Burgundy for several days--and drinking plenty of local wine--today was the first time we saw any vineyards.

Shortly before reaching Chagny we stopped for a break, and met a nice Dutch couple who are taking day tours around Burgundy on e-bikes.  Just as we were entering Chagny we met the first Americans we've encountered, a couple from Washington state on Bike Friday e-bikes.  They come over to France each year, rent an apartment in Burgundy for a month, and take day trips by bike.

45 km today.  Our hotel for tonight is in a nicely restored old building, with a lovely garden in the back.  Great dinner at a restaurant in the town.
